{"id":719,"date":"2011-03-18T11:21:10","date_gmt":"2011-03-18T11:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ijaps.usm.my\/?p=719"},"modified":"2012-07-17T12:49:39","modified_gmt":"2012-07-17T04:49:39","slug":"public-lecture-professor-gayl-ness-16-mar-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ijaps.usm.my\/?p=719","title":{"rendered":"Public Lecture by Professor Gayl Ness, 16 Mar 2011."},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On 16 March 2011, the Asia-Pacific Research Unit (APRU) welcomed Professor Gayl Ness to give a talk in the School of Humanities, USM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Professor Ness is professor emeritus of Sociology at the University of Michigan and visiting professor in the School of Social Sciences, USM. He began work in Malaysia in 1961 under a post-doctoral research grant and has followed Malaysian development since. This resulted in \u201cBureaucracy and Rural Development in Malaysia 1968.\u201d He now works broadly in the field of Population Growth, Economic Development and Environmental Impacts, focusing his work on Asia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-720\" title=\"Professor Gayl Ness\" src=\"http:\/\/ijaps.usm.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/prof-gayl-ness.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>In his talk, \u201cReflections on the First Generation of Malaysian Leadership and a Reassessment of May 1969,\u201d Professor Ness shared his thought and his first hand experience of observing the work of the the late Tun Abdul Razak \u00a0during the latter\u2019s time as the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Five major points have been presented in this lively talk, namely:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The rise of ethnic politics and the happy occurrence of the Alliance<\/li>\n<li>The relationship between Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman and his deputy, Tun Abdul Razak<\/li>\n<li>The extraordinary work of building a new independent government that mostly owed to the skill, diligence and vision or Tun Razak<\/li>\n<li>The impact of Konfrontasi on Malaysia\u2019s leadership team<\/li>\n<li>Reassessment of 13 May 1969<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We are grateful with Prof. Ness\u2019 presence to share his wealth of experience, knowledge and wisdom.
