{"id":5420,"date":"2020-07-09T08:09:15","date_gmt":"2020-07-09T00:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ijaps.usm.my\/?page_id=5420"},"modified":"2020-07-09T14:31:50","modified_gmt":"2020-07-09T06:31:50","slug":"book-review-connecting-oceans-volume-1-malaysia-as-a-maritime-nation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ijaps.usm.my\/?page_id=5420","title":{"rendered":"Book review: Connecting oceans: Volume 1 \u2013 Malaysia as a maritime nation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>EXCERPT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his keynote address to the Asia-Europe Conference 2019, organised by the Asia-Europe Institute of the University of Malaya, Malaysia\u2019s Deputy Minister of Defence, Liew Ching Tong said that \u201cWe are a maritime nation with continental roots linking Pacific Ocean and South China Sea on one side to Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean on the other side, while also connected to the Eurasian continent by land.\u201d By defining Malaysia as a \u201cmaritime nation with continental roots,\u201d Liew underscored the importance of the oceans to Malaysia, geographically, historically, economically and geopolitically. The maritime heritage of the country needs to be harnessed and embraced.
