ABSTRACT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia is one of the few countries to have a noun\n\u201cvelikoderzhavnost\u201d\u2014 greatpowerness\u2014to define its status and position in the\nworld. This \u201cgreatpowerness\u201d is a central element of Russia\u2019s national identity\nand exerts huge influence in the country\u2019s foreign policy making. Similarly,\nAsiatic Russia is a prime component defining and promoting Russia\u2019s national\nidentity and its quest for great power status as it conceives of itself as a\ngreat power straddling Europe and Asia. This paper looks at the way in which\nAsiatic Russia is conceptualised under Russia\u2019s great power\u2019s narrative. By the\nsame token, it looks into specific issues of significance for Asiatic Russia,\nsuch as migration, demographics and economic development, and the way they have\nbeen both politicised and securitised. In this sense, the rise of China presents\na major dilemma for Russia: on the one hand, Russia\u2019s actual engagement with\nChina substantiates its identity as a global power; on the other hand, at a regional\nlevel China embodies a potential menace to Russia\u2019s greatpowerness. This article\nanalyses relations between Russia and China, and attempts to describe the nexus\nbetween cooperation and the country\u2019s claims to great power. It is argued that\nRusso-Chinese regional interactions are the barometer of the overall Russia- China\nrelations. This paper attempts to connect three aspects\u2014national identity, geographical\nsettings and external strategy, to determine the place of Asiatic Russia in\nRussia\u2019s contemporary relations with China in the context of Russia\u2019s great\npower identity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
