{"id":458,"date":"2012-06-27T06:21:26","date_gmt":"2012-06-27T06:21:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ijaps.usm.my\/?page_id=458"},"modified":"2020-04-19T19:26:53","modified_gmt":"2020-04-19T11:26:53","slug":"the-balance-of-power-taiwan-strait-an-assessment-choon-yin-sam","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ijaps.usm.my\/?page_id=458","title":{"rendered":"The Balance of Power in the Taiwan Strait: An Assessment, by Choon Yin Sam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vol. 6, No. 2 (2010): 71\u201395.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This paper argues that the passage of the Anti-Secession law in March 2005 was\u00a0a logical step forward by the Chinese to restore what they perceived as an\u00a0imbalance of power across the Taiwan Strait. A chain of events prior to the bill\u00a0suggested that Taiwan had gained an upper hand with regards to the Taiwan\u00a0issue due mainly to the developing US \u2014 Taiwan relationship and Taiwan\u2032s\u00a0strong pro-independence position under the Democratic Progressive Party\u00a0(DPP). The passage of the Anti-Secession law told the world that China would not\u00a0allow Taiwan to secede and that the Chinese were willing to fight for this cause.\u00a0The Chinese have long held the position that Taiwan is part of China. They\u00a0consider reunification with Taiwan to be a principled issue of national unity,\u00a0sovereignty and territorial integration of the motherland, an issue of critical\u00a0importance to China\u2032s national interest. The election of Ma Ying-Jeou as Taiwan\u2032s\u00a0President in March 2008 was at least marked by a temporary reduction of tension\u00a0across the straits. However, the new president\u2032s efforts to foster a closer\u00a0relationship with mainland China have not generated as much of a positive\u00a0impact. Hence, tension across the Taiwan Strait remains intense.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Author&#8217;s bio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Choon Yin Sam (PhD, University of South Australia) teaches at PSB Academy in Singapore.
