Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n Southeast Asian and Chinese women have been marrying Taiwanese men since\u00a0the 1980s. Nonetheless, cross-border marriages were not common until the 1990s,\u00a0when the \u2033Go-South Policy\u2033 was implemented. Unfortunately, these cross-border\u00a0marriages have become commoditised. In addition, misperceptions broadcasted\u00a0by the mass media have stigmatised these self-titled Taiwan new immigrant\u00a0females (or TNIFs). This ethnographic research explores the self-perceptions of a\u00a0particular group of TNIFs who have moved to Taiwan from urban regions in their\u00a0homeland. Participant observation and in-depth interviews were employed to\u00a0gather data, and these two sources of data were triangulated between one\u00a0another. Research results indicate that many people came to Taiwan seeking a\u00a0better life and not necessarily for economic reasons. However, their experiences\u00a0in Taiwan have been largely unpleasant. Nevertheless, by working together with\u00a0other TNIFs and Taiwanese people, they have come to call Taiwan their “home”.<\/p>\n Author’s bio<\/strong><\/p>\n The author specialises in the field of multicultural education and bilingual education.
