His PhD (obtained from the Australian National University), investigated the rise of Makassar as a city-state through an analysis of Makassar&#8217;s genealogical records and a reconstruction of the 14th to 17th century settlement patterns in Makassar&#8217;s hinterland. His postdoctoral research, undertaken jointly with Ian Caldwell (then at the University of Hull), documented the prehistoric origins and pre-Islamic history of iron production in Luwuq, northwest of Makassar. Currently he is employed with &#8220;The Archaeology of Sulawesi: A Strategic Island for Understanding Modern Human Colonization and Interactions across Our Region&#8221; project, funded by the Australian Research Council to the Australian National University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Bulbeck is a specialist in the late prehistoric and historical archaeology of Sulawesi.
