{"id":312,"date":"2012-06-26T17:26:38","date_gmt":"2012-06-26T17:26:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ijaps.usm.my\/?page_id=312"},"modified":"2020-04-19T18:52:54","modified_gmt":"2020-04-19T10:52:54","slug":"smes-development-indonesia-do-economic-growth-government-support-matter-tulus-tambunan","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ijaps.usm.my\/?page_id=312","title":{"rendered":"SMEs Development in Indonesia: Do Economic Growth and Government Support Matter? by Tulus Tambunan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vol. 4, No. 2 (2008): 111\u2013133.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is an ongoing debate in the literature on development of small and medium\u00a0enterprises (SMEs) in less developed countries (LDCs) on two issues: The\u00a0survival of SMEs in the course of economic development and the importance of\u00a0government promotion programs for SMEs development. This research aims to\u00a0examine those issues with Indonesian data. As a means to address those issues, it\u00a0uses a simple regression model. It shows that both real gross domestic product\u00a0(GDP) per capita and government development expenditure (in which part of it is\u00a0used to finance SMEs development promotion programs) have positive\u00a0correlations with SMEs share in GDP. With this finding, the research argues that\u00a0SMEs in LDCs have a chance to survive and even to grow in the long-run for\u00a0three main reasons: (a) they have a niche market for themselves; (b) these\u00a0enterprises act as a &#8216;last resort&#8217; for the poor; and (c) the production linkages\u00a0between SMEs and large-enterprises (LEs) in the form of subcontracting have\u00a0become increasingly important, and thus, they will grow along with the growth of\u00a0LEs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Author&#8217;s bio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tulus Tambunan is a Professor of Indonesian Economic Studies at the Faculty of Economics, University of Trisakti, Indonesia. He also acts as director of the Center for Industry and Small and Medium Enterprise Studies in the same university. His academic work has been mainly in the areas of industrialization, poverty, international trade, and development of small and medium enterprises.
