International financial institutions and\u00a0national governments have focused on the growth of remittances, their impact on\u00a0poverty alleviation and development. In this paper I present a complementary\u00a0picture from the perspective of the migrants who send money home. I draw on an\u00a0ongoing qualitative project of family, money and migration in the Indian\u00a0Diaspora. Migrants send money home because they want to continue to remain\u00a0part of their families and communities back home. Remittances display this family\u00a0and community identity to themselves and to others. Remittances thus are family\u00a0and community threads that intersect across countries in an increasingly global\u00a0world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Author&#8217;s bio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Supriya Singh graduated from\u00a0RMIT University, Melbourne, where her research is focused on: user centered design of new technologies; cross cultural design; the sociology of money and methodological issues relating to qualitative research.
