{"id":177,"date":"2012-06-26T08:27:26","date_gmt":"2012-06-26T08:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ijaps.usm.my\/?page_id=177"},"modified":"2020-04-19T17:54:53","modified_gmt":"2020-04-19T09:54:53","slug":"preventive-medicine-mission-civilisatrice-laurence-monnais","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ijaps.usm.my\/?page_id=177","title":{"rendered":"Preventive Medicine and &#8220;Mission Civilisatrice,&#8221; by Laurence Monnais."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vol. 2, No. 1 (2006): 40\u201366.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This paper is part of a broader analysis of French health policy in colonial\u00a0Vietnam\u00a0(1860\u20131945), and in particular of the campaigns organized in the\u00a0region by the French administration against the most important epidemic\u00a0and endemic diseases, during a key period in the history not only of the\u00a0emergence of biomedicine and its principal preventive strategies, but also of\u00a0state intervention into public health issues in Europe and in the West in\u00a0general.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Author&#8217;s bio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Laurence Monnais is assistant professor at Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al (Department of History \u2013 Center for East Asian Studies, CETASE). She is a specialist in the history of medicine, health and health practices in French Indochina and 19th\u201320th century Vietnam. She is the author of M\u00e9decine et colonisation. L\u2019Aventure indochinoise, 1860\u20131939 (Paris, 1999) and several articles and book chapters published in French and English. She is currently working on two collective essays.
